Target Audience: Nurse leaders including new or experienced DONs, ADONs, Charge Nurses, Unit Managers, Staff interested in serving in a permanent or interim DON role, Administrators, Corporate Staff

This 8-week webinar series runs August-September 2022 and focuses on skill building for serving effectively as the Director of Nursing with emphasis on effective leadership and staff engagement, nursing operations and systems of care for common conditions treated in the LTC setting.

Discussion will include:
• Survey readiness & avoiding frequently cited deficiencies
• HR management
• Staff training/competency
• Risk Management
• QAPI activities targeting QM areas
• Fundamentals of reimbursement
• MDS oversight
• Promoting 5-Star quality

The Series

AUGUST 3 - A Day in the Life of a DON
This session will provide an overview of daily responsibilities and expectations as we examine a day in the life of an effective DON.

AUGUST 10 - Risk Management
This session will focus on Risk Management including: The regulatory requirements; key functions and role of the DON in oversight and addressing risk areas; staff training objectives; ; and risk management
implementation strategies with case examples

AUGUST 17 - QAPI
This session will discuss the key components of Quality Assurance and
Performance Improvement (QAPI) and the DON’s role and responsibilities
for QAPI related to driving quality care and regulatory compliance.

AUGUST 24 - HR Management
This session will focus on Human Resources (HR) Management: The requirements/key components; hiring/firing and disciplinary action guidance; exploring staffing sources and employee retention; and the role of the DON in HR Management.

AUGUST 31 - Survey Readiness
This session will focus on Survey Readiness: Key components for being survey ready every day; tools and resources for survey readiness; staff training priorities; and health inspection implementation strategies with case examples.

SEPTEMBER 7 - MDS and Medicare Essentials
This session will discuss essentials of the MDS and Medicare for the DON to develop key skills for overseeing the RAI process. Action items for the DON related to ensuring QM accuracy, clinical documentation quality, and
reimbursement compliance will be reviewed.

SEPTEMBER 14 - Essential Resources for the DON
This session will discuss essential resources and reports for the DON including: CMS regulatory resources; RAI, Quality Measure (QM), Quality Reporting Program, and 5 Star manual resources; Standards of Care resources; policy, form and audit tool resources; and advanced credentialling resources.

SEPTEMBER 21 - Leadership and Management
This session will introduce key concepts in leadership & management for the DON including the skills necessary to be an effective leader and manager, leadership styles, leadership principles to effectively lead and manage the nursing team, and strategies for time and workload management including effective planning and delegation.
