Dehydration is a significant yet frequently overlooked risk in senior care settings. This session explores the health impacts of inadequate hydration, including increased confusion, heat-related illnesses, UTIs, falls, and safety concerns for older adults. Participants will learn why hydration requires intentional, structured oversight and gain practical strategies for building a proactive, sustainable hydration program. It will also address barriers such as cognitive impairment, limited thirst sensation, and inconsistent protocols, offering solutions to strengthen staff engagement and integrate hydration efforts into daily care routines.

Abigail Bailey - Analyst & Consultant, Aging Services, ECRI
Abigail Bailey is a Certified Dementia Practitioner through the NCCDP with a master’s degree in geriatric psychology. She brings seven years of experience across a range of professional settings, including inpatient geriatric psychiatry, long-term personal care, and memory care. Abigail recently earned her NCCDP trainer certification and has extensive experience coaching colleagues, presenting to senior associations, and leading caregiver support groups. She has developed multiple educational programs focused on distinguishing normal and abnormal aging, while equipping caregivers—particularly in community settings—with practical strategies for success.
