LeadingAge Connecticut is proud to present our annual Dementia Care Symposium as a two-part webinar series featuring Teepa Snow, one of America's leading educators on dementia. Her teaching style is extraordinarily unique in that she is able to accurately demonstrate and model for her audience the struggle and challenges dementia creates for all parties involved.

This is an excellent opportunity for our members to have many of their staff participate in the webinars and fulfill their annual State of Connecticut dementia training requirement.

Tuesday, October 6th - Managing Other Medical Conditions When the Person Has Dementia
This session will provide information and discussion regarding the impact of dementia on recognizing and managing other medical conditions. Dementia causes changes in areas of brain function that affect the person's ability to recognize and respond to signals and symptoms of a variety of diseases and conditions. The presence of dementia also affects the person's ability to follow through and adhere to treatment protocols or recommendations. At some point, decisions about care and interventions will need to be adjusted to address the complexity of dementia plus other medical conditions. Attendees will be provided with information on various care approaches and the value of modifying strategies and expectations to focus on quality of life and a holistic view.

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

• Compare and contrast five different approaches to managing medical conditions when a person is living with dementia
• Discuss the changing expectations and issues that arise as dementia progresses related managing other medical conditions
• Match progression of dementia with level specific considerations in managing other medical conditions and treatment protocols

Helping People Move-Enhancing Mobility and Helping with Transfers and Staying Active
This session is designed to help health care professionals engage clients with dementia in successful programming to enhance functional mobility. This will be accomplished through the use of a variety of effective techniques based on level of dementia, environmental support, caregiver support, and use of personal preferences and life experiences. The program will be highly interactive and will provide learners with practical hands-on skills and strategies that have been shown to be effective with individuals living with varying amounts and types of dementia.

By the end of the session, learners will be able to:

• Describe typical client behaviors and skills that affect mobility needs and issues.
• Describe familiar activities that can be used to promote desired movement patterns with minimal verbal directions.
• Demonstrate use of different types of cues and prompts to facilitate function based on client's ability to interpret input
• Discuss the benefits of sustaining client mobility skills on client dignity and well-being as well as fall risk reduction
